Reader project: bright and colourful makeovers with PlastiKote spray paint

Regular visitors to our blog will know how much we love to see how others use PlastiKote spray paint around the home and every month feature a project that has caught our eye.

If you love colour, you’ll love Denise @huggablehome on Instagram. Her posts are full of vibrant colour, whether one of her crochet or knit projects, a colourful accessory or a bright spray paint makeover. Denise was kind enough to share some of her pics with us and tell us how and why she uses PlastiKote spray paints.

She says:

“Hi, my name is Denise, I am a crochet and knit accessories designer, with a penchant for diy and a love for all things bright and colourful.

I love to fill my home with colourful and fun décor and accessories, Plastikote products help me to do just that. These products allow me the freedom to make quick easy updates when upcycling. I choose to use Plastikote sprays as they go on quick and easy, create a flawless finish and are available in a great range of colours.

I love that they are also quite economical, I can usually complete several home accessories projects with one can. I always have my eye out for the next project and no item in my home is safe when it comes to spray paint. My favourite products are the gloss sprays, they give such an amazing finish and pop of colour in my home, I only wish my local stores stocked more of the colour range.

I also love the gold Metallic finish spray, it is honestly like spraying liquid gold.

Here are my top tips for using Plastikote spray paint:

Prime it! Always use the Plastikote spray primer, it ensures that you have the perfect base for your finished pop of colour. I find that one coat of primer is usually enough for home accessories. It dries quite fast, so it’s worth putting in the little extra effort for the perfect finish on your project.
Light coats! If you want the best finish, use light even coats of your spray. Pay attention to the distance directions on your can too. These steps will give you the flawless finish you are after.
Have fun! Upcycling and decorating can be so much fun. Dont be afraid to experiment with colour combinations. Let your imagination run wild and you can add some really unique touches to make your home yours.

Top tip: PlastiKote spray paint plus Ikea hack equals easy spray painting!

If you use PlastiKote spray paint for painting small home accessories – vases, ornaments, jars and bottles, for example – this is a useful little hack.

Invest in an Ikea Snudda. At around £6, it’s a bargain and can make spray painting even easier and quicker to do. The Snudda is Ikea’s lazy susan, a wooden turntable that is so useful when spray painting small items. It means you don’t have to try and pick up your sprayed item to get to another side, possibly getting paint on your hands or spoiling your paint job – simply turn the table and the unpainted side comes to you!

Keep it clean! Rather than build up layers of paint on your turntable, cover the top with newspaper and using masking tape to secure it underneath. This will make it easy to remove when you’ve finished your project, ready to be recovered for the next.

2. Place the item to be sprayed in the middle of the turntable.

3. Start spraying using even strokes and building the colour by slowly rotating the turntable with your free hand.

4. Leave your project to dry and then apply a second fine layer if needed. Allow to thoroughly dry.

5. Finally, remove the newspaper and you’re ready for your next project!

To help inspire your own Chalk project, this month’s competition features three of our favourite Chalk spray paint makes: Project A – a wicker basket sprayed in Chalk Frost Blue, Project B – a recycled key cupboard sprayed in Chalk Vintage White and Project C – an old stool sprayed in Chalk Pastel Green with a new fabric covering on the seat pad. How to: add colour to your garden with PlastiKote spray paint

With longer days and warmer weather, people flock to garden centres to stock up on bedding plants and flowers to fill their borders and add colour to outside spaces. With PlastiKote spray paint, you can add instant colour to the garden as well as freshen up tired-looking furniture and recycle all those garden centre plastic pots as well as planters and ornaments. PlastiKote Garden spray paint comes in ten gorgeous colours and can be used on most surfaces, from metal and wood to stone and wicker.

Here’s a simple project to get you started. It’s as easy to use as 1,2,3!

1 Make sure the item you are spraying is clean and dry.

2 Apply several fine layers of PlastiKote Garden spray paint in the colour of your choice (this basket is in Azalea, the other two are Light Blue and Lavender). The instructions are on the back of the can.

I find it gives a much smoother finish especially the gloss sprays. There’s such a huge range of textures and colours to chose from too.”

If you’ve never used spray paint and are a bit apprehensive, our advice is to buy one can and try it out on a couple of small projects before tackling something bigger. Top tips: prepping garden furniture for PlastiKote spray paint

After sitting out over the winter, garden furniture can look tired and in need of some TLC to give it a new lease of life ready for the summer.

Here are some top tips for prepping your garden furniture ready for a PlastiKote spray paint makeover:

2 - use wire brush to remove flakes of rust and old paint

Whether your furniture is metal, wooden or wicker, make sure it’s free of any flakes of old paint and, in the the case of metal furniture, rust. Use wire wool or a wire brush to get rid of any stubborn flakes.

3- clean with a damp cloth

2. Lightly sand the surface to get a good key, then wash with warm, soapy water to remove any dust or dirt. Allow to dry.

3. Set up your spray area with plenty of dust sheets or newspaper. It is preferable to spray paint outdoors on a warm, still day.

4 - Priming with PlastiKote Metal Primer

4. For added durability and greater adhesion, use a suitable PlastiKote Primer.

5. When the Primer is thoroughly dry, use the PlastiKote spray paint of choice and colour, following instructions on the can.

6. Our recommended choice of spray paint for garden furniture (wicker, metal or wood) is a PlastiKote Primer, followed by PlastiKote Garden spray paint.

As this is written, the sky is blue, the sun is out and the birds are twittering – Spring is on its way! And with Spring comes the thoughts of decluttering and cleaning the home. The words ‘spring clean’ may conjure up visions of cleaning cloths, mops and a lot of elbow grease but for us, it’s a time to give tired favourites a refresh with PlastiKote spray paint. Here are three easy projects to illustrate what a couple of coats of PlastiKote spray paint can achieve. Which is your favourite?

Reader project: make a Gin Bar with PlastiKote spray paint

The spraypaintideas team love to see how you use PlastiKote spray paint to transform bits and pieces around the house, from simple frame makeovers to handmade, customised furniture – and everything in between.

This gin bar from Rosie on Instagram – _@rosieanne – recently caught our eye, putting two of our favourite things in one project – PlastiKote spray paint and gin! It’s a stylish and useful upcycle of a storage trolley from Hobbycraft.

Rosie says: “I absolutely LOVE my gin and wanted somewhere to display everything and create a little gin corner without having to splash out on an expensive bar!

So I decided to create one myself and was surprised at how easy it was to use spray paint. I primed everything first and then used Rose Gold/Copper spray paint on the frame and Night Navy for the drawers.

This was my first project using the paint and I can’t recommend it enough. Easy to apply, quick to dry and the finish is fab! Super impressed with the turn out and now I have somewhere pretty to store my gins! (Any excuse to buy more pretty bottles!)”
