How to: create perfect summer dining

In the first of our summer dining features we show you how to create beautiful vases for your table centrepiece from empty wine bottles.

You will need:

Empty wine bottles

Newspaper/dust sheets

Elastic bands

PlastiKote Stained Glass Spray Paint

stained glass bottles step by step

How to:

  1. Make sure the bottles are clean and dry.
  2. Spread newspaper/dust sheets out in a well-ventilated working area or preferably outside.
  3. Place the elastic bands around the bottle to suit your chosen design or pattern.
  4. Stick a garden cane into the earth and place the bottle over it. This will allow you to spray the whole bottle without touching it.
  5. Apply two to three coats of PlastiKote Stained Glass spray paint, depending on how translucent a finish you would like. We chose Stained Glass in Pink, Green and Yellow. Allow 5 – 10 minutes between coats.
  6. The bottles will be touch dry in 30-50 minutes and thoroughly dry in 2-3 hours.
  7. Remove the elastic bands.
  8. Use as table centrepieces, flower vases or as ornaments!

Reader project: artist Olivier Jamin

With thanks to artist Olivier Jamin who recently sent us some pictures of his work in which he uses Valspar spray paint. Olivier describes himself below:

I am a deaf contemporary artist who specialises in hand drawn multi-coloured art, using stencils, mixed media and pens, pencils, paints, and spray pant. My aim is to produce work that combines the effect of colours and patterns and raise people’s imagination and awareness through my  own life experience and in particular my deafness, travels, dreams, colours and ideas. I am well known in mainstream communities around the UK and amongst the Deaf & Hard of Hearing community.

The main picture is called VW Camper -Split Van’s Long Flame. More of his pictures are reproduced below.
