How to: pimp your pine cones with PlastiKote spray paint

Pine cones – they’re free, easy to find and make fabulous festive decorations with the help of PlastiKote spray paint. In their natural state, they complement a woodland-themed tree or table setting but a spritz of spray paint can make them a colourful and glittery addition to your Christmas décor.

cone placenames

A place name holder is not always the first thing you think of when planning your festive meals so this is a great idea for a last minute make. Simply spray cones to match your theme using PlastiKote Fast Dry Enamel spray paint. With many colours to choose from plus some stunning metallics and glitters, one can will be enough to do lots of cones. Go bold with colour or just spritz the tips with white spray paint and silver glitter to give a frosted appearance.

If you feel a little more ambitious, these mini cone trees are a cute decoration and could double as place name holders. The mini maché planters and gift box are from Hobbycraft.

It’s a simple process to make hanging decorations from pine cones. Spray the cones, allow to dry and then screw small eyelets into the top of the cone. Hang on twigs and branches for an alternative Christmas tree – you could spray the twigs as well.

4b wreath after

An easy way to upcycle an old wreath is to spray it with a colour to suit your décor. Whilst it dries, spray some pine cones in the same colour or perhaps a metallic and when everything is dry, hot glue the cones to the wreath.

pastel cones

If your theme is pastels this Christmas, this may be the choice for you. These have been sprayed with PlastiKote Chalk spray paint.  Add a layer of Translucent Glitter spray paint to pimp them up for the festive season.

It really is so easy to do. Just make sure the pines cones are dry before applying the spray paint of your choice and follow the instructions on the can. Simple!

Mini makes: sweet gift jars with PlastiKote spray paint

Make a couple of these little sweet treat gift jars and keep in the cupboard for those unexpected visitors – they’ll be so impressed! It’s a great way of making a box of wrapped chocolates or sweets go further but look extra special.

1 - Red Place Setting Before

You’ll need a clean glass jar and lid, a small ornament (a little Christmas dec, cone or seed head for example), a can of PlastiKote spray paint (Fast Dry Enamel) and some sweets or chocolates.

red jar 2

Hot-glue the little ornament to the  lid and, when dry, apply the spray paint following instructions on the can. The paint will be completely dry in a few hours and it is recommended to leave for a 48-72 hours to harden off. Finally, fill with sweet treats or chocolates.

silver jar

It’s a great way of recycling old jam jars and makes a few chocolates look extra-special. And the lucky recipient can use the storage jar when they’ve eaten all the sweets!

snowmen

If you’ve a bit more time, why not make these little snowmen for the children? Spray a clean and empty juice bottle with white spray paint and allow to dry. Decorate with permanent marker to make the face and buttons, add a little felt scarf and fill with their favourite sweets.

Reader project: a look back at your inspiring PlastiKote spray paint makes

We enjoy seeing what our readers, Instagrammers and bloggers achieve with PlastiKote spray paint. To see what can be created with a little imagination and some spray paint inspires us to try different things too. From festive makes to furniture, we’ve seen a whole raft of projects that have got the creative juices flowing. Here is a small selection from the past couple of years:

Sarah sent us this lovely chair makeoverIt was a first time project and we were thrilled to hear that it had inspired her to do more.

Have to say, we were also a little in love with her pooch!

reader project FINAL v2

This pretty table centre piece came from Rosie. She made it for the autumn but it took her all the way through to the festive season. Gorgeous!

Shelley shared this fabulous bedside cabinet makeover with us. She took the transformation further by changing the handles to pretty glass ones and applying some marbled paper to the top.

Hard to believe this was once a plain brown wood set of drawers.

This upcycled chalkboard was sent in from Jack. We love his use of bits of driftwood, old gates, pallets, all sorts – check his Instagram feed to see all his fabulous creations.

Lisa’s cute little storage jars caught our eye last year. We’ve done Easter and Christmas themed sweetie jars but love these funky feline and duck storage jars using Metallic spray paint. Jam jar upcycles can be a thing of beauty!

How to: candlestick updates with PlastiKote spray paint

Candlesticks have always been one of our favourite spray projects as it is so quick and easy to change the look with PlastiKote spray paint. As the seasons change, so do our candlesticks! At this time of year, look at what you have and think about updating your collection for the festive season. Ring the changes again in Spring with brighter, sunnier hues.

how to candle 2We gathered this selection and gave them a makeover with Metallic Silver and Twist & Spray White Satin spray paints. These colours work well throughout the year, not only at Christmas.

how to candle 6

These two images show the candelabra before it was sprayed with Metallic Silver for the first pic above. Using up left-over Fast Dry Enamel spray paint, the multi-coloured candelabra looked fab on a summer dining table. Toned down with Twist & Spray Matt Black, the candelabra adds a certain elegance to the black and white themed dining table.

If a shiny metallic finish is not your thing, try Metallic Brushed Nickel spray paint which has a flat silver finish. Spraying a collection of candlesticks one colour brings cohesion to an otherwise mismatched grouping.

how to candle 3

This collection of slim stemmed pretties has been sprayed with various colours from the Fast Dry Enamel spray paint range. The coloured candles complement their holders

It really is so easy to do. Just make sure the candlesticks are clean and dry before applying the spray paint of your choice and follow the instructions on the can. Simple!

Top tip: Christmas tree makeover with PlastiKote spray paint

Artificial or real Christmas trees – where do you stand? It’s all down to personal choice and budget. However, when it comes to disposing of the trees, the obvious choice is real as it can be mulched and nobody wants to add to landfill with more plastic. But if you already have an artificial tree and have fallen out of love with it, why not give it a makeover?

top tip Nov 4a

This gold tree looked good but didn’t fit in with the new Christmas theme. It was sprayed with PlastiKote spray paint in Black (from the Twist & Spray or Super range) to give it a new lease of life.

top tip Nov 1

Inspired by this makeover, two more stylish looks were achieved by spraying it again…and again!

top tip Nov 3

Gold trimmings interspersed with red and white decorations work well with the red tree.

top tip Nov 2

Silver decs, pale pink baubles and fluffy feathers give this pink tree a feminine charm.

Why not update your Christmas theme and recycle your artificial Christmas tree?
